हमारी आवश्यकता
मानव जन्मजात साधक है। साधक की क्या-क्या आवश्यकता है इस सम्बन्ध में विचार करने से ऐसा लगता है कि साधक के सामने सबसे बड़ी समस्या क्या है ? एक समस्या तो मुझे यह मालूम होती है कि साधक के सामने मौलिक प्रश्न है देहाभिमान गलित होने का । दूसरा प्रश्न है अप्राप्त परिस्थिति के चिन्तन का । अप्राप्त परिस्थिति का चिन्तन न रहे । तीसरा प्रश्न यह है कि जीवन में नीरसता न आये । और चौथा प्रश्न है कि अभाव का अन्त हो जाय । ये चार समस्याएँ साधक के सामने रहनी चाहिए । इन समस्यायों का हल होना सम्भव है ।
अब देहाभिमान-रहित होने के लिए कोई उपाय नहीं है सिवाय इसके कि वह अकिंचन और अचाह हो जाय । और कोई उपाय ही नहीं है । कितना ही तप करे, कितनी ही योग्यता का सम्पादन करे, बलपूर्वक कितनी प्रकार की साधनाएँ करे, लेकिन जबतक अकिंचन और अचाह नहीं होगा तबतक देहाभिमान का नाश नहीं होगा । अर्थात् जबतक यह निर्णय न करे कि मेरा कुछ नहीं है, मुझे कुछ नहीं चाहिए ।

Our urgent need
Man is a born sadhaka, innately, a spiritual aspirant. What confronts him as prime problem comes to the fore by considering what the needs of the sadhaka are in this regard. One of the fundamental questions that faces the sadhaka, it appears to me, is that of dissolution of conceit of the body. The second question is his brooding on a situation that does not obtain. That is to say, thoughts on non-existent circumstances should leave off. The third question is that there should be no apathy, no listless boredom, and no monotony in life. The fourth question is the tortuous feeling of want. The sadhaka should address himself to the four problems which are likely to be solved.
There is no measure to get rid of vanity of the body except getting free of the sense of belongings and desire. There is absolutely no other way out of it. No amount of austere tapas, nor cultivation of abilities nor stubborn resort to many kinds of spiritual practices can do for attaining non-attachment to possessions and desirelessness which alone ensure the demolition of the conceit of the body. That is to say, this requires an unflinching determination by the aspirant that nothing belongs to him, he wants nothing.
